You might be surprised to discover that some of the most innocuous habits could actually be aging you. Preventing fine lines and wrinkles is certainly easier than trying to treat them once they form. While wrinkles are a normal part of life and aging, there are things you can do each and everyday to keep your skin looking young and healthy so you can knock a few years off your age and people will be none the wiser.
Wearing sunscreen each and every day without fail is probably one of the best things you can do to keep your skin looking and feeling its best. Not only does exposing skin to the sun’s rays cause sun damage and increase your risk for skin cancer, it can also cause premature lines and wrinkles. To protect your skin from the sun, always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 every day (even in the winter and on cloudy days).
Get Enough Sleep
Sleep is so very important and yet not enough of us get quality sleep every night. Nights of tossing and turning won’t just leave you grumpy, tired and mentally foggy, it can also lead to wrinkles. That’s because a lack of sleep can actually accelerate the signs of aging and can also affect the skin’s ability to repair itself every night. Most adults require anywhere from 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Are you getting your beauty sleep?
Did you know that as many as 75 percent of US adults suffer from chronic dehydration? This statistic is startlingly and could have a serious impact not just on your health but also on the health and appearance of your skin. If like most people you aren’t getting more than 2.5 cups of water a day, it’s important that you up your water intake to at least 8 8-ounce glasses per day (and even more if you’re active). Staying hydrated keeps the skin looking plump and radiant (and who doesn’t want that?).
Keep Skin Moisturized
Dry skin can also leave you prone to those early signs of aging, so it’s important that you keep skin supple and hydrated. Everyone should use a moisturizer every day, which can improve skin’s glow and also reduce the appearance of facial lines. Those dealing with more severe dry skin may need to turn to their dermatologist for more intense moisturizers.
Sleep on Your Back
If you find yourself snuggling with your pillow night after night you may soon notice fine lines developing on your face as a result. Just changing your sleep position alone can easily prevent these “sleep wrinkles”. If you want to reduce wrinkles on your face avoid sleeping on your side or stomach and sleep on your back instead.
Of course, a dermatologist offers a wide range of cosmetic treatments that can also reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. From Botox and dermal fillers to customized facials, laser treatments and chemical peels, there are many options out there to help you achieve a younger appearance. Talk to your dermatologist today about ways to prevent and treat wrinkles.

How does Botox work?
Many of the lines and wrinkles you see are the result of dynamic expressions that occur every time you move your face. When you're younger, you may notice a temporary crease between your eyes when you frown, or lines around your eyes when you laugh. Although these lines initially disappear the moment you stop frowning or smiling, they may become permanent as you grow older.
Botox injections minimize lines by preventing your muscles from contracting when you make dynamic expressions. When the muscles relax, your skin begins to smooth out, making these lines and wrinkles much less prominent.
Is Botox the right choice for me?
Botox is an excellent option if you're unhappy with your lines and wrinkles, are in good health, and are between the ages of 18 and 65; however, you won't be able to receive the injections if you are pregnant, nursing, or have multiple sclerosis or another neuromuscular disease. Botox results are temporary and usually last between 4-6 months, depending on the area being treated.
Why types of lines and wrinkles does Botox treat?
It's amazing the effect one or two little lines can have on your appearance. When vertical lines appear between your eyes, you may look tired, angry or sad. Botox smooths the lines, rejuvenating your appearance.
Have the crow's feet at the corners of your eyes become much more noticeable lately? Botox offers a simple way to minimize these lines that appear when you laugh or smile.
Do you wish you could pull your hair back or wear forehead-baring hairstyles but feel self-conscious about the horizontal lines on your forehead? After your Pompano Beach skin doctor injects Botox into your facial muscles, your forehead furrows will be much less noticeable. The injections can also improve the appearance of lines around your mouth and decrease the dimples in your chin.

The telltale signs of aging skin—wrinkles, puffy eyes, age spots—may start to appear as we grow older. We can’t fight the aging process, but we can take steps now to help reduce and prevent wrinkles from appearing prematurely.
Many factors can contribute to the onset of wrinkles, which are frequently produced by years of unprotected sun exposure in combination with each person’s unique genetic predisposition. Wrinkles are a by-product of the aging process. As we age, our skin loses its elasticity, is less capable of retaining moisture and is slower to heal. All of these contribute to the development of wrinkles and sagging skin.
How Can I Slow the Progression of Wrinkles?
Daily skincare and proper sun protection are important factors in slowing the aging process, diminishing fine lines and minimizing wrinkles.
- Take your vitamins. Many vitamins are good for the skin. Vitamin C, a natural antioxidant found in citrus fruits and dark green leafy vegetables, can help reduce the appearance of sun damage.
- Apply sunscreen. Protecting yourself from sun exposure can help prevent the progression of fine lines. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying a sunscreen with a SPF of at least 30 to protect against harmful UV rays.
- Moisturize. Dry skin causes the skin to look dull and aged. To prevent dry skin, apply moisturizer every day.
- Get your beauty sleep. When your body doesn’t get enough sleep, it produces excess cortisol, a hormone that breaks down skin cells. Keep your skin looking and feeling young by getting at least seven hours of sleep every night.
- Avoid tanning beds. Tanning beds emit harmful UVA rays and are never 'safe' alternatives to the sun.
- Take care of your hands. Our hands are often the first part of our body to reveal signs of aging, as they are the most used and exposed parts of the body. Protect the hands by wearing gloves, moisturizing and applying sunscreen.
- Quit smoking. Smoking may damage more than your lungs—it causes skin aging and wrinkles around the mouth.
Like it or not, wrinkles are a natural part of aging. Even the most diligent skincare regimen or the most expensive wrinkle cream won’t totally eliminate your fine lines. You can significantly reduce the appearance of your wrinkles, however. Start taking care of your skin now, embrace your age and love the skin you’re in!
Your facial features change with time. Crow's feet, smile lines, and forehead wrinkles are all unavoidable--or are they? At Hecker Dermatology Group in Tamarac and Pompano Beach, FL, Drs. David and Melanie Hecker are the board-certified dermatologists who can address both your medical and aesthetic skin issues. BOTOX Cosmetic is one of their most sought after and effective treatments, erasing the signs of aging so effectively.
Why skin wrinkles
Several factors change how smooth our facial skin remains as we age. One is collagen, a protein which keeps skin elastic and smooth. Collagen production diminishes over time, thus contributing to wrinkles and fine lines.
Another factor is sun exposure. Too much sun dries the skin, making it leathery and lined. Tanning in artificial light causes the same problem.
Additionally, repeated motion of facial muscles wrinkles the skin. Called dynamic wrinkling, these lines appear in response to frowning, smiling, and laughing. The vertical lines which look like the number 11 and appear between the eyebrows are perfect examples of dynamic wrinkling.
What can be done
Of course, there are invasive surgical procedures which can erase years off facial appearance. The facelift is a prime example. However, few people wish to experience the discomfort, downtime, and expense associated with complex aesthetic procedures.
So, the professional team here at Hecker Dermatology Group in Tamarac offer BOTOX: injectable medications which block the movement of certain facial muscles, allowing any lines and wrinkles to relax, smooth over, and look far less obvious. Comfortable and quick, BOTOX helps people ages 18 to 65 to look and feel great!
They happen right in-office! Dr. Hecker screens patients before proceeding with the injections. A small, fine needle administers this purified form of the botulism toxin. Injections take just a few minutes and cause very mild side effects, such as a stinging sensation and localized tenderness, redness, and swelling.
Regarding therapeutic effects, they may take 7-10 days for full effect. Your rejuvenated, youthful look will last for a few months and then will require touch-up treatments.
Other uses of BOTOX
Aside from its cosmetic benefits, BOTOX has medical applications, too. Dentists use it to treat temporomandibular joint dysfunction, while specialists use it to reduce migraine headache pain and to relieve strabismus (i.e. crossed eyes) as well as rapid eyelid movements and blinking.
At Hecker Dermatology Group, the doctors and their support staff help scores of patients enjoy the benefits of more youthful-looking skin. BOTOX injections could help you, too.
