How does Botox work?

Botox is an injection of the botulism toxin in a safe, refined form. Botox works by relaxing the facial muscles. When the muscles are relaxed, the skin over them appears smoother.

Getting an injection is relatively painless, and you should only feel a small prick at the injection site. You may notice redness or swelling at the injection site immediately afterward but this should subside quickly. You may see some results quickly, but it could be a week before you see the full effect of the injections.

There is maintenance recommended with Botox injections. Botox can keep your muscles relaxed for up to four months, but your doctor will recommend follow-up injections every three to six months to maintain your results.
