Skin of Color/Keloids

Although many skin conditions affect most people, there are some skin conditions that affect the skin of color population more.
The skin of color population includes those of African-American, Latino, Native American and Asian backgrounds.

The Skin of Color patients has a variety of skin conditions for which they seek treatment. The most common skin conditions for which they seek treatment include:

  1. Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation. A darkening of the skin or a dark mark that often occurs on the skin after a prior skin condition such as eczema or atopic dermatitis. See your Dermatologist for the different treatments available for this skin condition.
  2. Pomade acne. This occurs when pomades, salves or oils are used in the hair in order to control the hair and the pomade or salve causes acne along the hairline and on the forehead. Your Dermatologist can prescribe medications in order to treat this form of acne.
  3. Seborrhea. It is a scalp condition that causes excessive dandruff on the scalp because of the use of the pomades mentioned above. Your Dermatologist can prescribe special shampoos as well as increasing hair washing to avoid this condition.
  4. Folliculitis. Folliculitis can occur anywhere on the body as well as in the scalp from the use of pomades. A Dermatologist will give prescription medication to treat this inflammatory condition.
  5. Acne Keloidalis. Often caused by shaving, tweezing, and plucking the coarse hairs on the body and it is especially common in the neck area. Your Dermatologist will advise against over-plucking the area, possibly recommend laser hair removal, and prescription medication are some of the treatments for this potentially scarring problem in Skin of Color patients.
  6. Keloids. Keloids are a type of raised scar that can become thick, rubbery, and large. They are often seen in Skin of Color patients at the site of prior trauma, such as a surgery site. However, they can also occur spontaneously, where there was no previous trauma. Often times keloid scars can itch, be painful and even affect your daily life if they become unusually large. Treatments can include injections for small keloids, however, large keloids are now being treated with superficial radiation technology or SRT. SRT is a superficial radiation treatment with an FDA approval to treat keloid scars. The recurrence rate is less than 8% for keloid removal. Hecker Dermatology Group is one of the few offices in Broward County that is offering SRT treatment at our Pompano Beach location. Contact us for a consult for keloid removal at 954–783–2323.
