What is Restylane® Kysse?
Restylane® Kysse is the newest filler on the block. The hyaluronic-acid based injectable is approved for plumping lips and filling wrinkles around the mouth (also known as smokers™ lines or perioral rhytids). The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved sister-filler Restylane® in 2005 for treating moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and smile lines. Restylane® Kysse is an injectable gel formulation of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural sugar found in our skin. This injectable provides natural-looking results to combat the signs of aging commonly found around the mouth.
Unlike Restylane®, Restylane® Kysse contains the anesthetic lidocaine to help take the sting out of the shot and improve comfort during the procedure. Both Restylane® products are composed of hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in the body. Our natural supply of hyaluronic acid tends to diminish as we age.
In the study that led to the FDA's approval of Restylane® Kysse, fully 98 percent of participants reported an improvement in lip fullness two weeks after treatments, with 76 percent still showing such fullness six months after their injection. According to manufacturer Galderma, Restylane® Kysse results last for at least six months. Treatment time ranges from 30 minutes to one hour.
Restylane® Kysse is non-animal based. Allergy pretesting is therefore not necessary. Still, the filler is not for everyone. It should not be used in people with a history of hypersensitivity to local anesthetics of the amide type (such as lidocaine) or gram-positive bacteria, such as Streptococcus, and/or those who have bleeding disorders.

How Does Restylane® Kysse Work?
Restylane® Kysse is an injection and must be administered by a trained physician. The physician will then inject Restylane® into and around the lips strategically using an ultrafine needle. Multiple lip treatments may be scheduled, but each treatment should be limited to 1.5mL per lip and only 1.0mL for fine lines. Administering more lip filler than this can cause negative reactions at the injection site. Negative reactions can include swelling and bruising, countering the goal of achieving a natural appearance.

Are There Any Side Effects?
There may be some mild side effects, such as swelling, pain, redness, or bruising, but many patients report them as mild and lasting under two weeks if they do occur. Due to the lips™ natural volume in younger people, those under the age of 35 are more likely to experience swelling, while those over 35 are more likely to experience bruising. If negative side effects do occur, after-treatment instructions will be provided to minimize these effects.
